Armafix are pleased to have supplied the electrical contractor working on the new Drax Power Station near Selby.  This landmark has appeared on the city skyline as the Hull-based specialist engineering business Spencer Group has constructed a facility which will support a major green energy investment at the Port of Hull.

Over 2300m of cable tray, 66m of cable ladder and just short of 1000m of slotted channel are being used to carry the cables in this multi-million pounds contract.  Drax is effecting plans to transform three of its six generating units to burn sustainable biomass as it converts the business into a largely biomass-fuelled generator over the coming years.

The silo tower is in a key position close to Hedon Road and can be seen for miles around.  The finished structure will be 49 metres (160 feet) high, which is almost as high as Hull Royal Infirmary and one of the tallest structures on the city’s skyline.

In the space of just two weeks the main structure went up as concrete was poured into a 9m (30ft) steel shell which moved gradually up the structure.  It will be completed by a conveyor drive house at the top which will be linked to a conveyor belt that will take the biomass from ground level.

The silo is part of a scheme that will process 1,000,000 tonnes of biomass each year that will be imported from Canada and the USA by sea to the Port of Hull in the form of wood pellets produced from forestry residues.  Once unloaded at the port, the biomass will be warehoused before being delivered to the new facility and unloaded into feeders which take it to the 250m long conveyor belt.

The facility and connected infrastructure is due to for completion in September and will begin operating in October.

The work is part of a huge £100 million investment in the Humber Ports that is related to a 15-year contract between port operator ABP and Drax Power Limited to process biomass shipments destined for Drax Power Station. The investment strengthens the Humber’s position as the UK’s “Energy Estuary” and the region’s increasing credentials as a key renewables hub.
